"It is happening in every community, in our streets, on our doorsteps." Cherie Booth QC On Thursday 27 Nov, hundreds of people packed into the first ever International People's Lecture to hear Cherie Booth QC, Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and Steve Chalke, Founder of STOP THE TRAFFIK, discuss the fastest growing criminal activity in the world, and ways in which we can all be part of ending it. School children, business people, media and politicians, community leaders activists, educationalists, enforcement officers and STOP THE TRAFFIK partners from around the world gathered together to be inspired and reminded of why we are all part of the global fight to STOP THE TRAFFIK. Renowned human rights lawyer, Cherie Booth QC, spoke passionately about community involvement and action saying, "Trafficking is not something happening somewhere else. It is happening in every community, in our streets, on our doorsteps. We will only succeed in rooting out this misery and menace when we stand up and are counted. When, in fact, the fight to end trafficking in our fellow human beings becomes a mass movement demanding change." STOP THE TRAFFIK would like to thank all those who made it an evening to remember and recommitted to ACT and bring an end to people being bought and sold. If you weren't able to come to the event hop online and watch excerpts of the lecture on the STOP THE TRAFFIK website to see how the UN, international law and most importantly, community action are playing roles in tackling trafficking worldwide. Chocolate Unwrapped
One of the ways Steve Chalke, Founder of STOP THE TRAFFIK, encouraged attendees of the International People's Lecture to take action was by participating in The World's Largest Chocolate Fondue Party - an international series of events initiated by STOP THE TRAFFIK in order to raise awareness of child trafficking within the cocoa industry, and raise funds for further campaigning activities. If you're feeling the credit crunch but want to donate to STOP THE TRAFFIK, why not donate your time instead and host a Fondue Party? Due to the success of our initial Fondue Party call to action - originally set to take place during the last week of November only - we are now continuing to support parties until the end of the year! So in the weeks running up to Christmas, whilst chocolate sales are booming, we hope these parties will remind people that whilst chocolate is brilliant, its origins are often much less so. Thousands of children are trafficked into forced labour every year in order to produce these treats for us, and yet, much of the population is unaware of the exploitation hidden behind their golden wrappers and tasty goodness. Hundreds of fondue parties have already happened and news of more continues to reach us from all corners of the world, including Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Kenya, Lebanon, Luxemburg, Mozambique, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain, UK and USA! Be a part of creating change and get dipping!
