On February 13th 2008 STOP THE TRAFFIK delivered over 1.5 million declarations to the first global United Nations GIFT (Global Initiative to Fight Trafficking) conference in Vienna. Chair of STOP THE TRAFFIK, Steve Chalke addressed the opening session. Steve was appointed as UN GIFT Special Advisor for Community Action Against Human Trafficking.
Steve said, “To deliver over one & a half million declarations to the UN is a remarkable achievement. But it is only the beginning. STOP THE TRAFFIK is committed to becoming the greatest global grassroots movement in the fight against trafficking ever. We are all about enabling people everywhere to do something that stops the traffik.” OUR EASTER CHOCOLATE CAMPAIGN The chocolate industry has until July 2008 to deliver on its promises to stop using exploitative child labour on cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast. In the next few weeks our action will show the chocolate industry that we will not stop our campaigning until the trafficking of children is stopped.
STOP THE TRAFFIK GREAT EASTER EGG HUNT This is an Easter egg hunt with a difference. The best way to know that your Easter egg is traffik free is by buying fair trade chocolate eggs. Hunt out fair-trade Easter eggs in your town. In a traditional egg hunt the eggs are hard to find. Sadly it may be the same with fair-trade eggs. This may be frustrating but we must tell this story so people realize what is going on. Go to every shop & supermarket where you live to hunt out a fair-trade egg. Take a photo of yourself outside the shops where you find a fairly traded Easter Egg. Print off and give the shop manager one of the STOP THE TRAFFIK coupons. And then make your find the talk of the town…. 1Upload a photo, put your first name, where you are from & one line saying what it was like onto the www.stopthetraffik.org/easterHunt. 2Fill in this letter and give it to the manager of every shop you visited that didn’t sell a fairly traded Easter Egg. 3To make this story the talk of the town sends your story and photos of your Easter Egg Hunt to your local newspaper/local radio/school newsletter or other community newsletters. You can tell everyone what you found even when Easter has passed. OUR FUTURE CAMPAIGN Vienna was the delivery of our declaration but it was also a new beginning – Money/Sex/Chocolate.
Pruja & Accamma, two young sisters went missing from their home, in North East India. The father got a call from one of the girls to tell him that she was in Mumbai, but she didn’t know how she arrived. The girl was being held in a brothel. A team from South Asia Centre for Missing Exploited Persons, (SACMEP) with the assistance of the police, carried out a raid. The younger sister, aged 18, was found & rescued, however the other sister, aged 24, was not there. Investigations will continue to trace her. The Global Fund will resource clusters of projects that trace the trafficking routes in South Asia. With 5 million dollars other young people may be found, or not be trafficked in the first place. Every dollar will count, follow this link for more detail. SEX: Safety, hope & choice80% of the millions of people who are trafficked around the world are being used in the sex industry. Their freedom ripped from them, they are commodities, human cargo herded because of the greed & depravity of others. We must not turn away & ignore their plight. STOP THE TRAFFIK will campaign for human rights, & work for the care & security of survivors, & to see the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention. STOP THE TRAFFIK will demand that all trafficked women find 1SAFETY – in specialist safe house care with the right to remain for at least three months without the danger of having to testify against her trafficker 2HOPE – with the chance to take up skills & opportunities to start a new life in the country she’s been trafficked to or her own country. 3CHOICES – as they are made aware of ways to safely & legally migrate, so they do not become vulnerable to traffickers. Follow this link if you want to receive updates on this campaign. CHOCOLATEThe chocolate industry is starting to realise that we are not going to stop until they STOP THE TRAFFIK of young children who work as slaves to produce our chocolate. BUT WE MUST KEEP FIGHTING UNTIL WE WIN – THEY ARE WORTH THE STRUGGLE. Take part in the STOP THE TRAFFIK Easter Egg Hunt. When the chocolate industry can tell us that their chocolate products are free of trafficked labour, they will tell us immediately. It’s in their interests. At the moment they can’t make that announcement. For the most up-to-date information on progress in the chocolate industry read our Spring Update. COMING UP:
