The million mattered
Your million signatures will make a difference to what can be done to:
- Prevent the sale of people
- Protect the victims
- Prosecute the traffickers
Following the delivery of the Declaration in the opening session of the United Nations GIFT conference in Vienna, Steve Chalke, Chair of STT, has been appointed as the UN.GIFT Special Advisor on Community Action against Human Trafficking by the United Nations Office for Drug's and Crime.
This appoint is part of a new relationship that will see STOP THE TRAFFIK working with UNODC to produce resources for and connections to grass roots communities around the world as well as providing research about trafficking in goods and product supply chains.
It is an appointment which is simply a symbol of the power for change that 1.5 million voices in unison have created.
Alongside the delivery of the Declaration STOP THE TRAFFIK launched a Global Fund to fight people trafficking. This major fund will finance projects on the ground on a regional basis, helping NGOs to network together to make the biggest impact possible across the whole of a trafficking route. It is a fund for major donors, but also for ordinary people to be able to raise money and know that it is being used to the maximum effect.
Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, expressed his enthusiasm the work of STOP THE TRAFFIK "I believe that the STOP THE TRAFFIK Coalition has the potential to provide significant impetus to the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking".
