PRESS RELEASES

Blair to Sign Convention

23rd January 2007

STOP THE TRAFFIK welcomes the formal announcement by Prime Minister Tony Blair that the UK will sign the European Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. It now calls on the government to lose no time in ratifying and implementing it, so as to combat the worldwide buying and selling of people, today’s fastest growing illegal trade.

STOP THE TRAFFIK is a growing global coalition of over 500 organisations in over
40 countries campaigning to Prevent the sale of people, Prosecute the traffickers and Protect the victims. If put into practice, the European Convention will aid progress towards these three aims, particularly educational programmes to alleviate the conditions that lead to trafficking such as poverty, underdevelopment and lack of opportunities; the establishment of National Rapporteurs or taskforces to tackle people trafficking; and holistic assistance to identified victims of this modern day form of slavery.

STOP THE TRAFFIK also joins the European Convention’s call for governments to
engage in international cooperation and research so as to ascertain the true
nature and scale of this illegal trade in people and the subsequent establishment of a human-rights-oriented victim-centred approach. On the domestic front the thirty day recovery period for identified victims is thus essential and most welcome. The government must also ensure that citizens have the choice of purchasing goods with a ‘Traffik Free Guarantee,’ with no trafficked labour involved at any stage of production. It is only by engaging society at all such levels, as the European Convention advocates, that the UK can help to STOP THE TRAFFIK.
