STOP THE TRAFFIK book launched at United Nations New York Headquarters
Cherie Blair and Steve Chalke both spoke at the US launch of their new book, STOP THE TRAFFIK: People Shouldn’t Be Bought And Sold, at the United Nations headquarters last Thursday (April 30th) in New York.
STOP THE TRAFFIK, which enjoyed its UK launch earlier this year, presents a compelling, sobering portrait of the problem of human trafficking around the world.
Filled with stories, facts and stirring photographs, STOP THE TRAFFIK sets out the issues behind trafficking in human beings, as well as the practical actions that communities and
individuals can make to stop it in its tracks. These include making the conscious decision to buy fair-trade goods, food and chocolate, donating to micro-finance institutions that help
fund legitimate apprenticeship programs, spreading the word about the prevalence and impact of trafficking among family and friends, keeping a watch in your local community, amongst
many others.
Emma Thompson, the award winning British actress and anti-trafficking campaigner, commented -
"Make no mistake about it, trafficking is torture. It must not be allowed to continue - this book will help you to do your part…buy it and join the fight."
Human trafficking is the fastest growing global crime, second in size only to the illegal arms trade. It involves the movement of people through violence, deception or coercion for various
purposes—among them sex, forced labor, even body parts and ritual sacrifice.
The UN launch event was followed by a second hosted by the Salvation Army’s International Social Justice Commission in downtown Manhattan where Cherie Blair, Steve Chalke and Ruth Dearnley
CEO STOP THE TRAFFIK were joined by Simone Monasebian (Chief Officer of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in the United States) and Commissioner Christine MacMillan of the Salvation
Army.
